Metamerism
Metamerism (mə ta' mə ri' zəm) is the property of color vision which explains that two or more different spectral light stimuli may be perceived as the same color.
The different color sensitive cones in the eyes are more or less sensitive to different colors. However, different colors, or light spectra, can produce sensations from the cones that are identical. Look at the diagram below. The color produced by combining light from points A and B is the same as that produced by combining light from points C and D. The light spectra is totally different on the two lines, yet the perceived color is the same.
